American Counseling Association (ACA)
The ACA defines trauma as "any event or experience that leads to extreme emotional distress or psychological impairment." They recognize that trauma can result from various sources, including discrimination, bullying, oppression, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, natural disasters, institutional policies, vicarious and historical trauma, violence, and war (1).

Dr. Gabor Maté
Dr. Gabor Maté describes trauma as "an invisible force that shapes our lives. It shapes the way we live, the way we love and the way we make sense of the world. It is the root of our deepest wounds."(2) He emphasizes that trauma is not just about extreme events but can also stem from seemingly ordinary experiences that overwhelm our capacity to cope(3). To this end, Dr. Gabor Maté informs us that trauma is not just an event, but it is in the body.
